So you want to start racing?

We would love for you to join us on the track.

There is always help at hand, so contact us and we will help you on your way.  To help you get going, we have put together a "To do" list.

There are two options - either you join a team or you start your own team.

Joining a team

Send us your details on our Contact Us webpage and we will do our best to put you in touch with a team looking for a new driver.

Starting your own team

You will need 3-6 drivers of able body and some-what suspect mind.  More drivers means less money per driver and you always need a backup. Our series is designed for "the more rounded driver" that doesn't weigh 60 kilograms in his racing overalls.  So you don't need to go looking for the small guys. The weight limit is 200 kilograms per kart, including driver - most drivers will need to carry weight in the kart to make the limit.

Your new team will need a name..."Dave's Team" is not a cool racing team name.

Now your team will need a kart

New kart vs. used kart - A new chassis was introduced in 2006, they potentially can go faster but cost more.  The old chassis is tried and tested and is more than capable of fighting with the new karts.  Remember - this is an endurance series and reliability and consistency is more important than outright speed.  Second-hand chassis (Old design) can be purchased for R 10 000 to R15 000.  The current price for a complete new kart is R36000 excl. (Please note that pricing will change without notice).

The easiest way to get hold of a Kart (new or used) is to contact Action Karting.  When not buying through them, please check the Rules and Regulations to ensure you don't get non-legal components.

Remember your kart will need to be carried to and from the track, so a bakkie or trailer is needed.  Some second-hand karts are sold including the trailer.

Time to kit out your Team

Each driver will need a helmet and a pair of gloves which are compulsory.  Race overalls are nice to have but as long as you wear long pants and long sleeves you're good to go.

Your team will need a set of tools (spanners, sockets, etc....and lots of duct tape and cable ties).  Most teams are prepared to lend you some of the more specialised tools, if not currently in use, until you build up your own spares.  If you forget to return or replace it, don't bother asking again!!!  If you beat them in the last race, you may have to ask VERY nicely!!!  I'm sure you get the idea.

You will build up a supply of spares as you go (chain, clutch, rims, tyres).  If you are new to motor-sport, in the beginning you tend to lose nuts and bolts more than anything else.  The karts are designed for endurance racing and the engines are near "bullet-proof" 4-stroke sealed engines.  Two engines allows us to never "push the engines hard" while still allowing for high levels of performance.  Unlike most kart engines, our 4-stroke engines should last at least 4 seasons without needing any overhauls.  Engine maintenance is little more than an oil change and a service once or twice a year which is done by our Technical team for a nominal cost.

Let's get you registered

Contact Action Karting to arrange the paperwork.  Get it all signed by your new team and return with payment.

You are now ready for your first practise session.  Come down to VKC on any weekend, there will usually be another team to give some good advice and improve that all important setup.  Remember - it is not all about how much time you gain, but rather how much you lose.
